 ALARM / ANIMAL INCIDENT                                                                              LOTHIAN

On March 10, 2014, at approximately 3:51 a.m., officers from the Southern District responded to Southern Middle School located in the 5200 block of Solomons Island Road in Lothian for a report of an alarm. Arriving officers located a door in the front with broken glass and there were chairs knocked over inside the lobby. Officers observed a deer down on the floor being attacked a German Shepherd. Animal Control was requested to respond to the scene.

Officers then passed another doorway and observed a second deer sitting on the floor in distress injured from apparent bite marks. A second dog, possibly a black Lab mix, later appeared. Responding Animal Control Officers gained control of one dog and that dog was taken outside and secured in the Animal Control van. The second dog was eventually tracked back towards the front of the school and captured as well. Neither dog was wearing a collar when it was captured.

A third deer was eventually located trapped in a narrow hallway with extensive injuries and it died from its injuries. The other two deer were severely injured, but still alive.  They were ultimately humanely euthanized due to the severity of their injuries from the dog attacks. Police Supervisors determined with school officials that the school would not open due to possible contamination and hazards from the incident. The owners of the dogs were located and the dogs are in the custody of Animal Control at this time.
